The protected park is also home to some of Europe’s most diverse wildlife and has earned itself the nickname ‘the French Texas’, thanks to the vast herds of bulls and wild white horses that roam freely and the local cowboys that can often be seen galloping the plains. Some 10,000 pink flamingos add a splash of color to the otherwise bleak landscape, and almost 500 bird species call the Camargue home, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers during the summer and winter bird migrations. The National Park is Western Europe’s largest river delta, and is most easily reached from the nearby cities of Arles or Port St Louis du Rhone.
