Aix's fountain-studded Cours Mirabeau boulevard exudes grandeur, but wander off the beaten path and you’ll find unassuming streets framed by vine-covered houses and cafés with specials chalked on blackboards. As grand and historical it may be, Aix also has a humble Provencal charm that’s nothing less than adorable.
Of course, there's more to see in Provence than just Aix, and the town's location in the heart of the region makes it easy to travel to other attractions and destinations. Take a day trip to the Cote de Provence wineries, the charming villages of the Luberon or perhaps the fishing village of Cassis with its famous calanques. The papal city of Avignon is also nearby, and the Camargue – home to wild flamingos – is a mere hour west.
