Bangtail Muster
A highlight on the Alice Springs calendar of events is the annual celebration known as the Bangtail Muster. Taking its name from the stockman’s practice of snipping a piece a cow’s tail when counting it for transport, the local Rotary Club has organized the festival in early May of each year since 1961.

The centerpiece of the day is the parade. Schools and local organizations put weeks of work into the concept and assembly of each float. The parade begins on Gap road, and proceeds through Todd Mall to Anzac Oval, where the judging occurs. A day of sports, dancing, martial arts exhibitions and general fun and frolic ensues.

All proceeds go to the Alice Springs Youth Centre. Bangtail Muster Day is now recognized as the beginning of the tourist season in Alice Springs.
