Just 35 miles northeast of Belize City, Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest and most populated offshore island. It’s also the primary tourism destination, receiving over 50 percent of annual visitors. It’s no surprise--“la isla bonita” has much to offer. The island’s main hub, San Pedro, is the party capital of Belize, with the largest concentration of restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the country. The Barrier Reef is a ten-minute boat ride from shore for a plethora of over or underwater activities. Mestizo culture runs deep--a mix of Mayan and Spanish--as evidenced at the Sunday beach barbeques and the cultural festivals celebrated year round, including the Día de San Pedro, celebrating the island’s patron saint.

There’s plenty to do on Ambergris Caye, from shopping and bar hopping to birding and eco tours of the lagoon side and even a visit to the only open Maya site on the island; while up north and down south, seclusion is a distinct possibility at some of Belize’s most exclusive beachfront resorts.
