This Guatemalan convent has a past unlike other convents - women were not required a dowry to join. The building, featuring the work of architect Diego de Porres, was finished in 1736, was the last convent founded in Santiago and abandoned less than half a century later when the 1773 quake scared its 28 occupants to move to a safer spot. Fortunately, the damage was not catastrophic.

Visitors to the convent today can explore the grounds, including the gardens, bathing halls and private cells of the nuns.
