Grand Canyon Skywalk

The Grand Canyon Skywalk, the world’s highest manmade structure -- by more than 2,300 feet! The glass, 70-foot long, open-air Skywalk is suspended 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, providing 720-degree views.

The Skywalk is operated by the Hualapai Tribe, which owns and protects more than one million acres of land throughout the Grand Canyon’s western rim. During construction of the Skywalk, architects and engineers were concerned not only with safety, but also with creating a structure that would balance well with its natural surroundings and protect the values held by the Hualapai. As a result, the structure can support the weight of 71 fully loaded 747 airplanes (that’s a whopping 71 million pounds!), withstand winds up to 100 miles per hour and survive a magnitude 8.0 earthquake.

The Hualapai hope that sharing this land, and the breathtaking landscape, will provide their present and future generations with a much-needed economic revitalization. Although still being built, in the future The Skywalk facility will also include a visitors center with a museum, a movie theater, VIP lounge, gift shop, and several restaurants and bars, including a high-end restaurant with an outdoor patio and rooftop seating.

Even with its remote location some 120 miles from Las Vegas, travelers can easily experience the Skywalk ($25 for a 15-minute walk) with Viator excursions to the West Rim, including by hummer, SUV, helicopter or bus.

Tips for enjoying the Skywalk

Bigger than expected crowds are making their way to the West Rim each day, and finding they need to be well prepared in order to enjoy this amazing new attraction. To make your Skywalk experience truly memorable we recommend you bring the following:

  • A little patience! And maybe your iPod... waits in line of over an hour are common.
  • Bottled water. You can't buy it on site yet, and you will get thirsty!
  • Sunscreen and a hat. The desert is hot in spring and summer!
  • Comfortable shoes and light clothing.
