Cruises from Athens

Most island-hopping cruises from Athens start off at Piraeus harbor, gateway to the 3,000 plus Greek islands that spill out in to the Aegean Sea from the mainland. Those closest to Athens include the Saronic Islands and it’s possible to get a taste for island life by taking a guided day cruise of three islands in one day. Explore the pretty white-and-ocher town of Hydra, the Temple of Aphaia on Egina, and the abandoned Russian WWII dockyard on Poros – plus enjoy a traditional Greek lunch aboard your hydrofoil – and still be back in Athens in time for supper.

If you fancy a longer sojourn at sea, there are a number of cruising options available from Athens. Take the ferry from Piraeus to spend five days in the Cyclades Islands, taking in three very different destinations. Mykonos may be party-central, with vast nudist beaches and a gay nightlife, but it is also the island of adorable whitewashed villages and shady cobbled lanes, cobalt-blue topped churches and side trips to the sacred sites on neighboring Delos, a mere 30 minutes away by boat.

Santorini is famous for its dramatic cliffs, arty villages, expensive shops and stunning caldera sunsets, while laid-back Syros is tranquil, with plenty of soft sandy beaches and the charming Neo-classical town of Ermoupolis to explore.

Travelling by sleek wooden motor yacht, expand your cruise to seven nights island-hopping in the Cyclades and encompass an overnight stop in Paros as well as mooring up at a deserted beach on Poliegos, uninhabited apart from its salt-water-drinking goats, and overnighting in unspoiled Folegandros, where large cruise liners cannot berth.

Alternatively make Mykonos your sole destination, choosing from two- or four-night packages. There’s even the perfect cruise for landlubbers who don’t like to be out of sight of terra firma; a three-hour coast-hugging sailing trip to the island of Fleves from Piraeus for snorkeling in the pristine waters of the Saronic Gulf.
