Covered most of the stops of the city tour. The underground, museum and sky tower will beg you to return.
These were definately the 'must do' attractions in Auckalnd! The zoo tour was quick, and we luckily didn't have any slow coaches. The harbour cruise was really good and well run. The Sky Tower was good, but entry slow and the iPhone ticket was a new one for the person on the gate. We had to wait ages instead of being taken straight in. Obviously the view is fantastic. Watching people drop to the ground on the Sky Tower Drop was hilarious! Strongly recommended.
The morning was badly organised, I had to walk a fair way to my pick up point, passing a bus stop and a motel on the way. I was told to be at the stop 15 minutes before, even though I was the only pick up outside of the city. The bus turned up at the pickup time of 8:05 dropping me at the tour company's office in the national bus depot at 8:30, where there were no cafe facilities and had to wait another 15 minutes for the driver to turn up. When I queried why I couldn't get picked up at either the bus stop or the Motel, I was told that the company did not pick up at those points. This is a disgraceful method of doing business for a service industry, ignoring the wishes of their paying customers! The only points of interest on the morning tour were Mt Eden and the Antarctic experience. The afternoon on the other hand was excellent, the trip to the zoo was well organised, the harbour sail was great and it was all rounded off with a visit to the Sky tower. The only drawback was there was no drop off at my accomodation
In winter this bus goes only every 60 minutes and makes 9 stops, most of them destinations such as the Sky Tower or aquarium.. A very small portion of this trip could be described as scenic. At NZ$35 per person it's not worth the money: pick a destination and take a metro bus: it's cheaper and faster. Commentary is taped and driver seemed to know little history.
The confirmation details don't give you enough information as to WHERE to pick up the Hop-on Hop-off tour. I found myself wandering around the Sky Tower unsure of where to go. The answer is out on Victoria Street. Look for the sign that says "Explorer Bus." The other drawback is that the buses only come by every half hour and on the satellite loop, it's only once every hour. So, be sure to pick up a schedule of when they're supposed to be at each major stop or you may "just miss" a bus and have to wait a long time. Overall though, the Explorer Bus was an easy way to see most of Auckland's major attractions. I would recommend only a one-day pass, though. If you want to spend a lot of time at the Auckland Museum, there are cheaper ways to get there.
