3 Days in Auckland: Suggested Itineraries
Written by Viator, August 2010
Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, set between two harbors of staggering beauty. Whether your passion is America's Cup sailing or relaxed harbor cruises, exploring the wilderness or shopping, dining and culture, Auckland offers an amazing range of things to see and do.
Day 1: Auckland Orientation
Discover the vibrant city of Auckland on the hop-on-hop-off bus, or get to know this lovely city on the Auckland Great Day Out. View famous landmark Mt Eden, shop in historic Parnell Village, visit the Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World and relax in Auckland Domain - the city's oldest park. If you only have one day, take the Must-Do Top Three: meet unique New Zealand wildlife at Auckland Zoo, enjoy a scenic harbor cruise and take in spectacular views from the Sky Tower.
The one must-do activity is sailing on Auckland's harbor. Choose from coffee cruises and lunch cruises, or the extravagant dinner sail aboard a 50-foot yacht.
Day 2: Auckland Outdoors and Adrenaline
Go straight to the top with the Auckland Harbour bridge climb - the 360-degree views of the city are magnificent. If you need more of a thrill, take the plunge on a breathtaking harbor bridge bungy jump, or join the crew on an actual America's Cup yacht, trying your hand at America's Cup style match racing.
Take a short trip to the great outdoors, learn to surf in the best beach locations, or go whale-watching and dolphin-spotting in beautiful Hauraki Gulf. Feel the adrenaline rush as you zoom past the islands on an Excitor jet-boat cruise, through the "Hole in the Rock" and back past Cape Brett Lighthouse.
Day 3: Auckland Day Trips
Gorgeous islands, hot bubbling mud, glow-worm caves, historic sites and fresh snowfields - there's plenty to enjoy on a day trip from Auckland.Cruise the Bay of Islands to historic Waitangi, drive to the dunes at Cape Reinga, or walk along the rugged West coast and rainforest on a great outdoors eco walking tour. Explore the majestic scenery of Great Barrier Island, ride through the illuminated grotto of Waitomo Glowworm Caves and take a thermal mud bath in Rotorua. And if the mountains are capped with snow, take a mid-week break to go skiing on Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand's winter wonderland.
