When a part of a unique, lively town undergoes an economic revival, it becomes something of a cultural hotspot for years to come. Like Manhattan’s Meatpacking District or Chicago’s Wicker Park, Austin’s South Congress Avenue (SoCo) has, in recent years, emerged as a shining promenade full of loft apartments, funky home décor stores, boutique shopping and of course hip restaurants and beer pubs.
Simply a walk down SoCo between Olfort and Town Lake proves to be an invaluable look into Austin. SoCo can be seen as a little Austin within. From the hippie days of the always-open Magnolia Café, to the Mexican groceries and bakeries filling the air with sweet churro smell, to Uncommon Objects selling everything from recycled artwork to 50's kitsch, there’s a whole lot of Austin to experience in this little drag.
