Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria

Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria

If it's unmitigated alpine beauty you're after, the wide and varied expanses of Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria is a sure bet. Covering an area of nearly 700 square miles, Hohe is by far the largest of its kind in central Europe.

Natural features in the region include evergreen forests, alpine meadows, striking rock features, cliffs, peaks, and glacial ice fields and floes. Among the better-peopled destinations on the northern rim of the park is the spa town of Bad Gastein, which dates back to the 15th century, and recently played host to the snowboarding and boardercross world cup.
