Someshwara Temple

Tucked away in the lanes of Ulsoor market, this is one of the city’s oldest temples. With the market crowding around the temple, it can be easy to miss – from Bazaar Street, look out for its towering gates and the red-and-white-painted walls of its enclosure. Dedicated to the god Shiva, the elaborately carved pillars and intricate sculptures are characteristic of temples built during the Chola period (9th to 13th century).

Cave Temple

One of Bangalore’s most unique temples, the Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple is popularly known as the “cave temple” because its shrine has been built in a natural cave of solid rock. Located in Gavipuram in South Bangalore, the cave temple is dedicated to the god Shiva and the goddess Parvati and dates back to the 9th century.

Bull Temple

Locally known as “Dodda Basavana Gudi” (Big Bull Temple), this is one of the city’s best-known temples. Named after the gigantic 15-foot high statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull, the temple was built in the 16th century and has also given its name to the neighborhood it’s located in: Basavanagudi.

ISKCON Temple

The ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temple is the largest temple in Bangalore and one of the biggest “Hare Krishna” temples in the world. Built in 1997, this imposing structure perched on a hill in the neighborhood of Rajajinagar combines traditional temple architecture with modern elements and boasts a gold-plated temple spire and flag post.

Shiva Mandir Temple

This popular temple with a huge 65-foot high statue of the god Shiva sitting and meditating in lotus position is a new construction and a popular tourist site on Old Airport Road. Visitors enjoy taking part in the many organized spiritual activities like dropping coins in 108 bowls while chanting Shiva’s name, floating a paper lamp in the water representing the Ganges river, and praying to Ganesh the elephant god while tying a holy thread.
