Barbados Museum

From Amerindians to reef coral, plantation furnishings to rare maps, the Barbados Museum takes you on a journey into the past. A children’s gallery explores childhood experiences over the centuries, and an African collection displays antiques and crafts. If you’re here in December, drop in to browse the annual art festival.

The museum is housed in the Garrison building, a former British military prison. It’s a rough-hewn sturdy construction, softened by pink stucco walls and shady wooden upper-story balcony.

The building is also the headquarters of the Barbados Historical Society so there’s bound to be someone on hand to answer questions. A short walk from the museum is George Washington House, where the future US president stayed in 1751 on his sole venture outside America.

The Barbados Museum is south of Bridgetown in Garrison. To get there from Bridgetown, follow Highway 7 south out of town and you’ll find the museum opposite the race track in Garrison.
