Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is truly mystifing. No hyperbole here. The Wall is the planet's longest manmade structure, stretching approximately 4,000 miles like a dragon slithering from east to west through grasslands, desserts and mountains. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Originally built to protect various dynasties from raids by assorted nomadic tribes in the 3rd century BC, it has come to symbolize the strength of the Chinese nation. Today, parts of the wall are in ruins but its architectural grandeur still reigns.

Where to Wall
There are several sections of the Great Wall to visit, but the most popular by far was built during the Ming Dynasty (circa 1368-1640). Badaling, 50 miles northwest of Beijing city, has undergone significant renovations since the late 1950s and was the first portion of the wall opened to the public.
No surprise this area is tourist friendly, filled with lots of hotels and restaurants. It's also the spot that President Nixon and his wife visited during his historic 1972 China trip.
