One of the best places to explore marine life is the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, located only 4mi (6.5km) out of San Pedro. It is incredibly well developed, and is a perfect taste of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.
There is also the Bacalar Chico Reserve on the Mexican border, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 15,000 acre reserve can be explored independently or with a snorkel guide.
For a break from the sun, check out the charming shops on Back Street, as well as local soccer matches at the stadium near the San Pedro airport.

The easiest way to get to Ambergris Caye is via water taxi from Belize City. The water taxi terminal is about 20 minutes from the airport in downtown, and a one-way trip will take about 1 hour. You can also fly in from Belize City, where the flight will let you off in San Pedro. If you're coming in from Mexico, there is also some flight service from Chetumal.
The best way to get around Ambergris Caye is on foot. There are three main streets with a few that link them, and they are very easy to navigate. Many of the roads are unpaved, so car access is limited. You can also rent a bike or a golf cart to get around the island.
