Potsdam
Potsdam, on the Havel River just beyond the southwestern tip of Greater Berlin, is the capital of Brandenburg state. In the 17th century, Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg made it his second residence. With the creation of the Kingdom of Prussia, Potsdam became a royal seat and garrison town; in the mid-18th century, Friedrich II (Frederick the Great) built many of the marvelous palaces which visitors flock to today.

In 2001, Potsdam hosted the Bundesgartenschau (National Garden Show), for which this already lovely metropolis was further spruced up; whatever your tastes, a visit here is essential if you're spending any time in the area at all.
