The Jenolan Caves are believed to be the oldest in the world, and while much of their wonder exists under ground and in the dark, its 10 sub caves are worth a visit. Steel handrails, elevated walking paths and electrical lighting help alleviate anxiety around venturing on self-guided tours.

After exploring the caverns, stalactites and stalagmites, daredevils and adrenaline junkies can embark on the popular Plughole tour. This physically demanding caving adventure sends travelers up rocky walls, through narrow passes and into nerve-wrecking crawlspaces.

The caves can be visited any time of year, since the natural rock formation stays a steady temperature regardless of the season. Most visitors drive to Jenolan, but since gas is not available nearby it’s best to fill up in nearby Mount Victoria, Lithgow or Oberon. Caves are open daily from 9 a.m. until 4:45 pm.
