Home to the famous dingo, Fraser Island is also host to over 300 different species of bird as well as wallabies, possums, dugongs, flying foxes, and turtles. Nature lovers will enjoy the unique wildlife composition that the island offers as well as the gorgeous climate.
While you're visiting, be sure to visit Lake Mackenzie, the "crown jewel" of Fraser Island. The crystalline blue waters and shimming white sands make it one of the most popular tourist destinations.
For a taste of history, check out the Maheno Shipwreck, which occurred in 1935. Just north of the beautiful freshwater Eli Creek, learn about the true strength of the sea on this incredible passenger steamer. For stunning views, climb to the top of Indian Heads, the rocky outcrop on the northern end of the beach. Continue north onto the Champagne Pools, the rocky pools that are ideal for bathing.
Remember to only swim in designated areas: dangerous surf and sharks make swimming in the open ocean risky.
The only way to get a car onto the island is by ferry, so if you're interested in a vehicle, look into one of the many 4WD services available on the island. All vehicles must have a special permit, so be sure to research your options. Hiring or renting a 4WD is a very fun way to see the island, but can also be difficult if you do not have any experience. Booking a tour to the island is another great way to see the sites without having to hire a car.
