Day Trips from Byron Bay

Nature fans enjoy the easy access to three of the hinterland's national parks: Mt Warning (named for its looming Mt Warning), Border Ranges, and Nightcap. All three are World Heritage listed rainforests ripe for trekking, camping, picnicking and escaping the day-to-day city life.
The little hippy town of Nimbin draws travelers far and wide looking to delve into the world of alternative living. After holding the Aquarius Festival in Nimbin back in the 70s, many of those individuals stayed in the town, producing the colorful and laid-back vibe it exudes today.
Notable because of the Southern Cross University, and its inevitably numerous cafes, Lismore draws travelers from Byron Bay on a short 2 hour bus ride. Lismore is also home to a Koala Care & Research Centre, worthy of a visit for an up-close encounter with recovering koalas.
Just an hour's drive to the north of Byron Bay, adventure seekers have access to a handful of theme parks in the Gold Coast. If roller coasters aren't your thing, shopping and dining at some of Australia's finest are sure to entice.
Heading just another 45 minutes north past the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Queensland state capital city, offers dining, shopping, museums and fun for the day-tripper. For a coffee and designer clothing shops, head to trendy Fortitude Valley; for a more CBD-based journey, head straight to the Queen Street Mall.
