Cairns is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef,” and it most certainly is. Most travel enthusiasts know something about the beautiful beaches, terrific diving opportunities and resorts. It’s also a great base for day trips and extended excursions into the surrounding rivers, streams and gorges that abound in the region.
