Lake Tahoe
Trip Planning & Itineraries
Shimmering softly in myriad Technicolor shades of blue and green, Lake Tahoe is the USA's second-largest lake with an average depth of 1,000 ft (304m). Generally speaking, the north shore (much of it in the state of Nevada) is quiet and upscale, the west shore (in California) quiet and old-timey, the east shore undeveloped and the south shore busy with motels and flashy casinos. The casinos, by the way, are a clear indication that this part of Lake Tahoe is in Nevada.

Suggested Itineraries in Lake Tahoe
The horned peaks surrounding the lake are a recreational haven. Tahoe gets packed in summer, around holidays and on winter weekends when reservations are essential. As the north shore's commercial hub, Tahoe City, California, is great for grabbing supplies at supermarkets and information at the visitor center. With dozens of motels, eateries and stores lining busy Hwy 50, South Lake Tahoe (also in California) projects an urban vibe that contrasts sharply with the natural charisma of other lake towns.
The main draw of Tahoe's relatively undeveloped eastern shore is the Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park, a popular playground with beaches, lakes and miles of trails.
