With its laid-back Caribbean vibe, Isla Holbox (pronounced hol-bosh) is a tranquil island escape located just off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, northeast of Cancun where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea. Isla Holbox receives far fewer visitors than Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, and the island’s white sand streets see little traffic. Like other small Caribbean islands, golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation on Isla Holbox and much of the island can be easily explored on foot.
Ferries to Isla Holbox depart from the small coastal village of Chiquilá, located on the northeastern edge of the Yucatán Peninsula. Once on Isla Holbox, it doesn’t take long to settle into the slow pace of island life.
