A visit to the South Carolina Aquarium is more than just a meet-and-greet with the local sea life. The center point of the beautiful and historic Charleston Harbor, this sleek and modern aquarium juts out over 200 feet into the water and includes a massive Great Ocean Tank, a state-of-the-art environmental learning center, a Loggerhead Sea Turtle Rescue Program, a Touch Tank, and nine different galleries for spectators to enjoy.

Home to over 10,000 plants and animals nothing comes close to the feeling of walking the modern halls and gazing up at the 6,000-7,000 aquatic animals here. Over 60 exhibits are located throughout the aquarium, each designed to focus on five major regions of the Appalachian Watershed: the Mountains, the Piedmont, the Coastal Plain, the Coast, and the Ocean. Within these exhibits, visitors can find river otters, a very rare albino alligator (a popular favorite), sharks, and the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle.

This was the first aquarium I had ever visited and it was far more interesting than I would have expected. I fell in love with river otters at this place, and could have stood in front of their tank watching them for hours. I loved seeing all the fish and birds, and the structure itself was so pleasing to the eye that I took just as many pictures of the ceiling fixtures and rooms. It was definitely a highlight of my visit to Charleston.
