Thai Elephant Conservation Center

Since 1993, the Thai Elephant Conservation Center has been bringing travelers right up close to one of the jungle’s largest mammals. Visitors can spend the day—or longer!—enjoying the grounds while following expert guides who know just about everything about these massive animals.

A 40-minute show highlights the elephants’ unbelievable talents, which include playing musical instruments and painting, too. Guests can help bathe the elephants, visit the hospital and nursery and even go for a ride on an elephant’s back before heading to the dung paper factory for a look at one of the conservation center’s truly unique crafts.

Practical Info

The Thai Elephant Conservation Center is located at 28-29 Lampang-Chiang Mai Highway, about 70 kilometers from Chiang Mai. One-day mahout training courses are available for about 3,500 Baht, while longer stays are also possible for additional fees. Most events take place before 3:30 p.m., when elephants are led into the forest for the night.
