New Year’s Eve in Costa Rica
New Year rituals in Costa Rica might be a little different from North America or Europe, but one thing remains the same – it’s the biggest celebration of the year. Although many Costa Ricans opt to see in the New Year with their family, nightclubs and bars along the beach resorts organize some explosive parties – Mal Pais, Montezuma, Puntarenas, Jaco and Guanacaste, are all popular places to spend New Year’s Eve. Wherever you are, expect a sky full of fireworks as the clocks strike midnight.

One of the most popular destinations is Zapote, just outside of San Jose, where a six-day carnival known as ‘Las Fiestas de Zapote’ starts up after Christmas day and runs until the New Year. A series of rodeos, live music and street food take over the town for the duration, but the main attraction of the event is the bullfighting – an animal friendly but none-the-less entertaining version of Spain’s notorious bullfights.
