Look up anywhere in Edinburgh's old town and you'll see Edinburgh Castle, seeming to grow out of the blackened cold volcano that forms its plinth. There's evidence of human habitation on this spot that dates back to 900 BC, and the Castle has been a royal stronghold since the Middle Ages.
The place is steeped in history. There’s the Honours of Scotland – the oldest crown jewels in the United Kingdom, no less – and the Stone of Destiny, the coronation seat of ancient kings. There’s St Margaret’s Chapel, Edinburgh’s oldest building, and a cluster of military museums. You can take guided tours and see costumed performers bring the history of the Castle to life.

It's hard to miss Edinburgh castle when in Edinburgh -- but it is worth taking a full half day for a nice leisurely tour around. Highlights are the prisons of war exhibition and "Honours of Scotland" -- Scotland's crown jewels (try to go to this early to avoid the lines and tour groups). The views of Edinburgh are great -- try to go on a sunny day for good photo ops. We also took a great shot of out 7 year old inside Mons Meg -- one of the worlds oldest cannons. Continue Reading »
This was a really well planned trip and so much fun. The train ride is really long 4 12 hrs but the countryside along the way is stunning and it's fairly easy to sleep. Edinburgh Castle was really amazing and I would recommended taking the guided tour, which is free, you get good information about the Castle and about Scotland. The hop-on, hop-off was a nice way to see the town and appreciate the history. We recommend taking the bus tour directly to the castle, spend as much time as you want in the castle you'll also be there for the 1pm gun and then ride the bus tour in it's entirety to see the rest of the town. You'll have plenty of time to shop and eat along the way. We actually finished early, around 430-5pm and since the tickets are open tickets, you can take the early trains back to London. It was a really nice day and we really enjoyed Scotland. Continue Reading »
Meeting the co-ordinator. would have been better if they were highlighted, espicailly at that time in the morning, and the tickets for edinburgh castle should be explained that they are VIP tickets and you dont have to queue. but collected from the vip shop. Apart from those two things. fantastic. Edinburgh is perfect for a one day trip like this, and gives a glimpse into all the things that would be great to go back and see again, for longer. Everything else was brillantly explained, and easy. A long day, and a good day. well worth money and time. Continue Reading »
Practical Info
Enter the Edinburgh Castle through the Esplanade, where you might be lucky enough to see the changing of the guard (it happens on the hour). Allow at least a couple of hours to roam around the castle - there are several museums and the palace buildings within its walls.
