Edinburgh Military Tattoo
By Viator, August 2013
The traditional tattoo dates back to 1950 and each August over 200,000 onlookers gather to watch the spectacular, which is also televised around the world. The 90-minute show is held nightly throughout the festival season, with thousands of musicians, pipers, drummers, singers and dancers taking to the cobbled Esplanade to perform. Highlights include the Massed Pipes and Drums and the Massed Military Bands representing the Scottish regiments, and the haunting solo from the Lone Piper, spot-lit atop the castle ramparts. A dazzling fireworks display and a military fly-past bring the night to a suitably dramatic close, adding fuel to the claim that the Edinburgh tattoo is 'the most spectacular show in the world'.
