Paragliding in Fethiye
By Viator, January 2014
As you soar to heights of up to 10,000 feet above sea level with the wind in your ears, you’ll have breathtaking views of Ölüdeniz and the azure waters of the Blue Lagoon – one of the most frequently photographed sights in Turkey – and of the Gulf of Fethiye, with its many islands and its eye-catching coastline of intricate coves and bays. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Greek island of Rhodes, about 50 miles away. Depending on the time of day that you fly and the atmospheric conditions, you’ll stay up in the air for between 30 and 45 minutes before gently descending to the beach below.
For first-timers, taking a tandem flight with an experienced, certified pilot is highly recommended – paragliding is, after all, an extreme sport. A number of outfits in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz offer tandem flights, as well as training for those with prior experience who are looking to develop their technique.
Flights are offered from late April through October, at several times throughout the day. Due to atmospheric conditions, visibility tends to be best during the fall, which also sees the International Ölüdeniz Air Games, held for several days in late October every year since 2000. The event includes not just paragliding but other aerial sports such as skydiving, hang gliding and BASE jumping, and is as much fun for spectators as for those flying.
