Heading north from Miami just 15 miles (24km), the frenetic pace gives way to the wide, tree-lined boulevards, multimillion-dollar homes and luxury yachts sailing the Venetian waterways of Fort Lauderdale.

It wasn't always so: bolstered by movies like 1960's Where the Boys Are and peaking with its '80s remake, Fort Lauderdale was spring break central. It's now a stylish, sophisticated city with some world-class art, café-lined riverside walkways and the world's second-busiest cruise port after Miami. Like the rest of south Florida, Fort Lauderdale is a major gay and lesbian destination.

Suggested Itineraries Fort Lauderdale

During the high winter season, 2nd St's periodically closed off for a giant street party with drinking permitted (it's otherwise banned on the streets) and great bands.

Valiantly flying the spring break flag, beloved dive Elbo Room has been at the heart of the action since the 1930s. There's live jazz nightly at O'Hara's Pub & Jazz Cafe. Enjoy great microbrews at and diverse live music at the Poor House. Gay hot spots include Hamburger Mary's.
