Considering its isolation on the Brazilian map, Fortaleza is a surprisingly large and sprawling city. In fact, it rivals Recife as the Northeast's most important fishing port and commercial center above Salvador. Its attractions are packed along the beaches and the rest of the city is endlessly residential.
The beaches are not as attractive as you might hope, yet with its wild party atmosphere Fortaleza deserves at least a short visit. For many travelers, Fortaleza serves as a jumping-off point for some truly spectacular beaches, sand dunes and idyllic towns up and down the coast.

Journeying north of Fortaleza, you will reach Cumbuco. Cumbuco is a small laid-back Brazilian beach village with spectacular white sand dunes and beautiful empty beaches lined with green coconut trees. Choose from a variety of activities or just relax for the day.
Fortaleza: When to Go
Fortaleza is warm year-round, so weather concerns needn't dictate your travel plans too strictly. Even the wet season (February to June) is fairly mild, and barely affects the balmy temperatures or the sunshine quota (it has been claimed that Fortaleza is sunny some 350 days of the year).
There are several cultural festivities worth catching. Fortal, Fortaleza's lively out-of-season Carnaval, is held during the last week of July. The Lemanjá festival, which celebrates the sea goddess, is held on August 15 at Praia do Futuro. Regata de Jangadas, a sailing regatta with traditional northeastern jangadas, takes place between Praia do Meireles and Praia Mucuripe, during the second half of July. Semana do Folclore, the city's folklore week, runs from the 22nd to the 29th of August.
