While the Brazilian side of Iguassu offers the finest views, folks who want to immerse themselves in the prismatic mists of the other 80% of the falls will want to cross the border to Argentina. In general, it's very easy to travel between the two countries, with border formalities streamlined and simplified as you take the 20-minute bus ride (US$5) across the Iguassu River on Tancredo Neves International Bridge.

Buses depart every 40 minutes. The driver will hand you a paper ticket; keep this, as it's your transfer. You must bring your passport, but these are not always stamped if there's a line at the border; feel free to ask your bus or taxi driver to stop. You can theoretically be asked for a yellow fever vaccination card, but this is rarely a problem for obvious day-trippers. Plan to spend at least five hours exploring the Argentine side of the park.

The main issue at the borders these days is Brazil's reciprocal visa policy, enacted in June 2010, which subjects foreigners to the same visa restrictions that Brazilian tourists must endure when trying to visit some countries. Depending on your nationality, it's either an easy jaunt or expensive bureaucratic hassle to visit Brazil; US and Canadian citizens, for example, must arrange visas in advance and pay US$160 and US$100 for the privilege respectively. Citizens of the EU, UK and most Latin American countries, on the other hand, can cross the border without a visa or fee.

Since you're already in Brazil, however, you've already ironed out all those visa issues and are ready to enjoy the both sides of the falls. Hop on the bus and get hiking.

While Paraguay doesn't have a view over Iguassu Falls, Ciudad del Este is a quick and interesting trip from Foz de Iguacu. You can either take the bus or taxi across La Amistad International Bridge, or the car ferry ("balsa") across the Parana River—a one-hour trip that some visitors do just for the pretty river views, without even disembarking for a passport stamp.

Ciudad del Este, Paraguay's second largest city, is probably best known as a tax-free shopping destination, popular among Argentine and Brazilian tourists looking for great deals on electronics. There's certainly some waterfall tourism here, but since you have to enter Brazil to visit the national park, most people stay in Foz do Iguacu or Puerto Iguazu. In addition to the gritty city and its endless expanse of shopping centers, this is also a great base for exploring Guarani culture. About 95% of Paraguayan speak Guarani, and you can visit the Museo de Tierra Guarani (Museum of Guarani Land) in town, or book a tour to Refugio Tati Yupi, an autonomous wilderness reserve with hiking, camping, horseback riding, and other facilities for guests.
