On first glance, the city of Frankfurt, formally known as Frankfurt am Main, appears to be merely a transit hub and center for international commerce. And given that its prominence in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main Metropolitan area, the city’s commercial reputation is well-earned. Underlying this character, however, is a vibrant cultural life. Frankfurt may be known for its three-piece suits, but its social and artistic qualities are a veritable three-ring circus.
Day 1: Cultural Frankfurt
For one thing, Frankfurt sponsors the arts with more money than any other European city. As such, its exhibitions are always cutting edge. You can find many of these along the Main River in the Museumsufer District. Here the exhibits range from architecture to film to the city’s Jewish history. Other attractions include the city zoo and the beautiful Palmengarten, Frankfurt’s botanical garden. If you have several days to explore the city, the zoo and the Palmengarten are recommended for afternoon strolling after you’ve gotten acquainted with the city’s streets and transit system.
After you’ve seen some art, fauna and flora, you’ll probably want some food and drink. For all the staid businessmen, the city’s bar and club scene is among the best in Europe. In particular, you’ll want to check out the King Kamehameha Club. Why a German music venue is named for a famed Hawaiian monarch is anyone’s guess, but the club is a top stop for local, national and international acts.
Day 2: Historic Frankfurt
Of course, the city itself is an attraction of sorts. Dominating its skyline are the impressive Commerzbank Tower and the Messerturm building, both of which are the two tallest towers in the European Union, and the third and fourth-tallest towers on the continent. Downtown Frankfurt contains Römerberg, a neighborhood district that nods to the city’s medieval heritage. Here you will find various buildings in 14th and 15th century styles. While these were destroyed during the second World War, they were subsequently rebuilt according to their original designs. The Römer square is also lined with cafes and shops. This area is a good stop on your second day.
Day 3: Day Trips from Frankfurt
Consider taking a day trip to Rothenberg. Through
Viator, you can book a motor coach tour that takes you through the
scenic Spessart Mountains to Rothenberg, Germany’s “Jewel of the Middle
Ages.” Rothenberg is a well-preserved medieval town with modern
apportionments. In contrast to Frankfurt’s modernity, Rothenberg’s
ramparts, church, town hall and city gates are pleasant reminders of
Germany’s medieval past. The tour allows you time to browse the city’s
historic shops, followed by lunch at the Restaurant Tilman
Riemenschneider, named for a famous wood carver. After lunch, your guide
will lead you on a walking tour, pointing out important landmarks and
sharing historical anecdotes about the town.

Doing what: Rhine Valley Trip from Frankfurt including Rhine River Cruise
The scenery is beautiful. Highly recommend this tour. The meal was delicious. Stops to see scenic sights were nice extras. Enjoyed the wine tasting at the end of the day. All it lacked was an overnight stay in one of the old castles. Saw at least a dozen castles overlooking the Rhine amidst the very picturesque countryside.

Doing what: Black Forest and Strasbourg Day Trip from Frankfurt
I really enjoyed this tour, there was much too see and the time went by so quickly. The trip started with a trip through the spa town of Baden-Baden. We briefly went into the Casino, walked some of the streets, saw the hot waster source and it was time to return to the car. I wish we had some time to look into the stores and explore a bit on our own. The drive to the black forest was beautiful, we were lucky to not have fog during the drive. We stopped at a sad tourist trap and mediocre hotel. The Lake which was frozen when we visited was not much to see and the waitress in the restaurant was not very pleasant. I would have much preferred to have the 45 minutes allotted to visit this stop changed to our stop in Baden-Baden.
Strasbourg was an amazing stop. The city was beautiful, the cathedral breath taking. I could have spent the day here, exploring the streets, restaurants and shops. The weather was beautiful and everyone in town was outside enjoying the sunshine. The only down side of this trip was that the melting snow had made the level of the water in the river rise so high the boat tour was not operating. This probably allowed us the time to explore on our own so I am not that sad.
The tour guide, Peter, was an excellent guide, very informative, knowledgeable and pleasant. He found us a parking place everywhere we went which was an amazing feat in Strasbourg.
A sandwich and drink were provided by the tour, if I were going again, I would pack a snack and bring another drink. The walking was lengthy but not difficult and the temperature changed dramatically from stop to stop.
All in all, I was very glad I took this trip and look forward to my next Viator Tour.
