Imagine a pastoral European countryside of rolling hills and medieval castles, seemingly endless stretches of evergreen trees and blue sky. This fairytale backdrop is known as Bavaria, and it is one of the most picturesque places in all of Europe. Through this woodland setting winds the Romantic Road, a highway that will send your imagination wandering back to the days of the middle-ages.
On a three-day Romantic Road tour from Frankfurt, you’ll travel across this beautiful country to the historic, medieval towns of Rothenberg and Hohenschwangau, as well as the Neuschwanstein Castle, overlooking the nearby town of Füssen.
Your first stop is Rothenberg. From Frankfurt, your coach will take you to the charming, town of Wuerzburg on the banks of the Main River. You’ll continue on to Rothenberg, marveling at the centuries-old city ramparts, its medieval gates and Jakobskirche, the city’s famous church. In the afternoon, a guide walks you through the city, narrating your stroll with stories about the city’s heritage and historical landmarks.
After spending the night in Rothenberg, your next stop (after breakfast, of course) along the Romantic Road is Hohenschwangau. Passing through charming, cobblestone-paved towns, you’ll arrive. In the morning, you’ll continue on to two fantastic castles.
The first castle you’ll visit is Castle Hohenschwangau, the childhood home of the Bavarian king Ludwig II. This castle, built on the site of a fortress built by 12th century knights, was acquired by Ludwig’s father, Maxmilian II. Ludwig II’s love of fairy tales and Wagner’s operas are apparent in the castle’s accoutrements; these fancies would become more apparent when he commissioned the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle, your second stop.
Neuschwanstein Castle is noted for being the basis of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in California. Its gabled roofs and spires are directly inspired by King Ludwig II’s romanticism and penchant for fantasy, and the Wagnerian influence is even more apparent in this Romanesque Revival palace. Ludwig II intended for the palace to be a sort of theatrical setting, and your guided tour will delight you with stories of his eccentricities.
Following your trips to the castles, your tour finishes in Munich in time for dinner.Tours & Tickets
