Franz Josef & Fox Glacier Suggested Itineraries
Taking a guided walk on a glacier has to be one of the coolest experiences you'll have in New Zealand. Whether hovering over the spectacular ice formations by helicopter or strapping on crampons to hike the ice, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are truly unforgettable destinations.
Helicopter HighlightsA helicopter is the ideal choice for sightseeing, taking you up close to towering peaks, crevasse-filled glaciers and sparkling waterways. Embark on a Twin Glacier flight to marvel at the mantle of pure white snow, landing at the head of either Franz Josef or Fox Glacier.
Make a snow landing and walk along the Main Divide before heading back down towards the lush rainforests at the edge of the Tasman Sea.
Experience this wonderful alpine environment and get up close to touch snow, viewing the glaciers as they carve their way slowly down the frozen valleys from their origin in the mountains high above. You'll be captivated as you fly up and over Franz Josef and Fox Glacier in separate 40-minute helicopter flights. Land in the snow above the ice-falls and experience the magnitude of the scenery in a close-up encounter with Mt. Cook's western face, as the crevasses and ice forms race by below you.
Hiking Franz Josef
Strap on your Ice-Talonz and hand me the ice axe, we're going Glacier Hiking!
Enjoy panoramic views on the heli-hike combo with a scenic helicopter flight over Franz Josef Glacier and guided walk amongst the ice caves and pinnacles. You'll land high up on the glacier and hike into the most spectacular terrain, usually seen only by experienced mountaineers.
The all-day glacier adventure takes you through the most enthralling and challenging glacier terrain imaginable. Satisfying even the most ardent of adventurers, you could find yourself squeezing through tight blue crevasses or shuffling down near vertical walls of ice.
A day packed with adventure and adrenaline will introduce you to the exhilarating sport of ice climbing. Safely secured to your guide, climb the soaring ice walls, testing your limits and moving on to progressively harder climbs throughout the day, whilst enjoying the dramatic scenery and awesome terrain of the Franz Josef Glacier. For a less-strenuous experience take a relaxing, interpretive Valley Walk right up to the dramatic terminal face of this ever-advancing glacier.
