Swiss Towns Near Geneva
By Viator, October 2013
Stretching from Montreux to Lausanne, the idyllic Swiss Riviera has long been a favored haunt of international celebrities and European high flyers, with towns like Vevey set against an idyllic backdrop of the terraced Lavaux vineyards, the region’s only UNESCO World Heritage listed site.
Marking the midway point between Geneva and Montreux is Lausanne, renowned for its 14th century architecture and Olympic Museum, a nod to the International Olympic Committee that has its headquarters in the city. Also worth a visit are nearby Morges, the one time residence of Audrey Hepburn, and Nyon, famous for its Roman ruins and lakeside castle.
A little further afield, the alpine town of Gruyeres makes another popular day trip from Geneva, where sights like the 13th-century Gruyeres castle play second fiddle to the main attraction — the much-celebrated local cheese. Combine a tour of the medieval town center with a visit to the famous Gruyeres cheese factories, then take a scenic ride on the Panoramic Golden Express train, stopping on route to sample another Swiss classic at the Broc Chocolate factory.
