Genoa's glory days came in the 16th century, when it was known as La Superba (literally 'the proud' or 'haughty'). This golden age lasted into the 17th century and produced many magnificent palaces filled with great works of art – the glint of gold attracted masters such as Rubens, Caravaggio and Van Dyck, whose works still adorn the city's galleries.
