Day Trips from Glasgow

The affable rival to artsy Edinburgh, Glaswegians have long campaigned for the title of the most ‘Scottish’ city and while many opt to make the capital their base, Glasgow’s central location makes it a strategic spot from which to explore the country’s many attractions. High speed trains link Glasgow to Scotland’s main cities and Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen  can all be reached on a day trip, but to make the most of your time, book on a day tour that combines regional highlights.

In the west, the seafood capital of Oban makes an easy side trip from the city, from where it’s possible to take a ferry out to the Hebrides islands or spot whales and dolphins on a coastal boat cruise. A scenic drive though the surrounding West Highlands could also stop at Loch Lomond, the largest freshwater lake in Britain, the Trossachs national park and the coastal villages of Luss and Inveraray, before taking a detour to the famous Stirling Castle.

A little further north, the valley of Glencoe tops many travelers’ must-see lists, so make time for a hike through one of Scotland’s most enchanting landscapes, before heading  back to Glasgow. Tours to Glencoe often include a loop of the Scottish Highlands, taking in sights like Loch Ness, legendary for the mythical Loch Ness Monster that lurks in its waters, the Speyside Whisky trail, where you can discover the historic Scotch malt whisky distilleries, and the Cairngorms National Park.

Alternatively, head south to discover the rugged beauty of the Borders region, an expanse of quiet country towns and farmlands straddling the much fought over English border. Those looking to stray from the well-trampled tourist trail can also tour the south west Aryshire coast, the birthplace of Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns, and home to attractions like the Culzean Country Park.
