One of the absolutely spectacular adventures in pursuing Greece’s vast and historical landmarks, the monasteries atop the rock-towers of Meteora is sure to impress. Located in Thessaly in central Greece, a hike to the top of the rock-towers gets you to some of the most important Orthodox structures in the country, the 24 monasteries of the Meteora.

Of the largest of the six monasteries, the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, built in the 14th century, is the largest and now serves as a terrific museum surrounded by decorations now more than 500 years old. The second largest holy structure there, the Holy Monastery of Varlaam still contains the specific side-chapels built in honor of three bishops, while the old refectory is used as a museum highlighting its fruitful history.
