Hamburg Suggested Itineraries
Hamburg, Germany's second largest and most notorious city, is known for its magnificent harbor and for the Reeperbahn in St Pauli (the biggest red light district in the world and where the Beatles came to fame). Renowned for its wonderfully odd mix of bars, restaurants and nightclubs, Hamburg has cultivated a thoroughly enjoyable independent streak. It's also a hard-working port that's among Europe's busiest.

Day 1: Art Attack!

With over 79 museums, Hamburg is just as much a feast for the culture lover as Berlin or Munich.  Spend the first part of your day strolling the Kunstmile, starting with the impressive collection of the Kunsthalle and ending with the contemporary art and photography of the Deichterhollen. In the afternoon, learn the city’s history the fun way at the model-filled Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte. A Hamburg Card will get you discounts on admission to numerous museums.

Day 2: A Different View

Get another perspective on the city by getting up, out and around! The Baroque St Michaeliskirche has a tower that will give you an angel’s-eye view of the city, or get down by the water to check out the city’s riverside culture. Finally, take a night tour to see the city in its guise of evening illumination, complete with a sound and light show!

Day 3: Not Just Any Port

The HafenCity (Port City) development offers a wealth of cutting-edge architecture - like the new Science Centre, somewhat like a muscular and circular arrangement of duplo-blocks on steroids. Or the currently underway and “now famous before it is built” Elbphilharmonie, itself resembling a flaming crystal curtain, ablaze atop the existing and already distinctive Kaispeicher (an old harborside storage warehouse). Wander the day away and see which way the winds of change are blowing.

Doing what: Hamburg Hop-on Hop-off Tour - Red Double Decker

Its better with tour guides, but some guides lack in explaining the facts in the English language. Its also difficult for the guide to explain the facts in 2 different languages because you have driven by the historical site or place to see. (not enough time for them to talk) I have experienced bus tours with headphones (pre-recorded information) in a variety of languages. I really enjoyed the tour of Hamburg, the guides were very helpful and cordial. Thanks sincerely, Brian
