Mystifying audiences since 2007 the Impression West Lake show is arguably the most popular and well-known evening show in the entire city of Hangzhou. Staged on Yuehu Lake—a smaller yet natural part of West Lake—hundreds of characters perform on a platform which is situated only three centimeters below the surface of the lake, a feat of engineering which gives the illusion of dancers literally walking on water. A combination of theatrics, music and exceptionally choreographed dance, the Impression West Lake show is known to draw audiences from all corners of China and is a favorite among international guests.
Comprised of five separate acts, the Impression West Lake show follows the storyline of an ancient Hangzhou legend—the Legend of the White Snake—and is directed by Zhang Yimou, a master film maker and stage producer who similarly directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. Utilizing state of the art sound and lighting systems the Impression West Lake show creates a visual and auditory feast which, when combined with the natural beauty of the surrounding West Lake (Xi Hu) area, serves as one of the finest entertainment options in the city of Hangzhou. Performances run nightly from March through December, with a second showing offered on weekends.
