Nature & Wildlife, Swim & Snorkel, Walking/Hiking, Waterfall
Apart from swaying palms on white sand beaches, nothing says 'tropical paradise' like a crystal-clear cascade falling into a serene pool, surrounded by lush vegetation. Hawaii is renowned for its beautiful falls, and each of its four biggest islands offers something different.
Even if you're staying on Oahu and sunning yourself in Waikiki or elsewhere in the Honolulu area, you don’t have to miss out on seeing the state's famous falls. Spend the morning beachside then go hiking in the afternoon (or vice versa of course), joining a select group on the trail to Manoa Waterfall, through the teeming jungle of the Koolau mountains. You'll go off the beaten track but the pace is gentle, and on the way you'll learn about the tropical plants and birdlife that you come across. It's an all-round workout for the legs, the mind and the camera.

Or, if you can spare a whole day away from the beach, take a flying trip to the Big Island and the unique landscape of Volcanoes National Park. You'll also see breathtaking Rainbow Falls, a live lava flow (conditions permitting) and marvel at the stunning orchids which flourish here.
Then again if you're staying on the Big Island, a thrilling helicopter ride is a great way to appreciate the island’s natural splendor. Starting at Waikaloa, explore the dramatic northern tip of the island, with its plunging valleys, precipitous cliffs and gushing falls. Alternatively, extend your trip to take in even more, including steaming hot lava flows, or take off from Hilo to really see the best of the island's active volcanoes.
Meanwhile on Maui, you can spend the morning exploring the island's gorgeous falls and streams on a fascinating trek. Or start out snorkeling and kayaking on the island's scenic Makena coast before heading inland to get the best of land and sea. You can also combine kayaking and hiking on Kauai, where you'll encounter Hidden Valley Falls.
Want something a little more challenging? Trek to the amazing five-tiered Kalihiwai Falls, where you can float on inner tubes in that tropical paradise you’d always dreamed of.
