Ho Chi Minh Water Puppets
The water puppet show at restaurant Ngon, in Thao Dien village, is refreshingly uncomplicated and at the same time culturally intriguing. Enjoy tasty Vietnamese cuisine with a glass of pinot noir as local artists display mastery of their craft, bringing delightfully ornamented figures to life in a choreographed water dance.

The art of water puppetry can be traced to the 11th century, when villagers put on shows to entertain each other when the rice paddies flooded. The puppeteers are hidden behind a large screen and control the marionettes with a large rod under the waist-deep water. The lacquered puppets are a variety particular to the villages of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam.

The restaurant merits a visit on its food alone, but make sure to book a reservation for the water puppet show, which is presented weekly on Saturday evenings from 7.30pm
