The Azores

The mystical Azores, nine isolated islands rising steeply from the tectonic center of the Atlantic Ocean, are a destination for the truly adventurous. Alive with hot springs, crater lakes, and endless, achingly beautiful vistas across the waves and mountains, this is another world.

Perhaps the basis for Plato's tales of Atlantis, the Azores inhabit waters famously rich with sea life, including dozens of species of whales and dolphins. Fantastic diving and snorkeling through rich reefs and volcanic caves, or yachting in the sunshine above, are just part of these ilhas' intrinsic beauty.

As they rise through perfect Mediterranean climes to snow-capped Mount Pico (2351m / 7713ft), Portugal's highest point, the islands offer incredible beaches, wonderful wildlife-rich hikes, and a rich agricultural bounty expressed in their notable cuisine.

Practical Info

Although each of the nine Azores islands has an airstrip (including US-Portuguese military air base Lajes Field) most flights serve the islands of San Miguel (PDL), Faial (HOR), and Santa María (SMA).

Transmaçor operates regular ferries between São Miguel, Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa, with occasional service to Flores and Corvo. Taxis and buses serve most cities, towns, and tourist destinations.
