People coming to Istanbul usually want to see the major sights of ancient history during their stay in this beautiful city. Who wouldn’t want to see a 1500-year-old Byzantine church or an Ottoman mosque that has been active for over 400 years? While wandering around in the old town with my guests, we talk about history, culture, fashion, architecture, people and, of course, city legends. This wide range of topics gives context to so many of the city’s amazing sights. I like to help travelers get an idea about today‘s cosmopolitan city along with its background, which allows them to form a picture of Istanbul in their mind to take them back their home.
What many first-time visitors in Istanbul don’t realize is that while the old sights and history of the city are a large part of what makes it great, it has a fascinating modern history as well. As everything changes with time, so has Istanbul. Even the name of this city has changed many times, most recently from Konstantiniyye to the Istanbul of today. To discover some of the city’s transitions over the last 200 years, you can visit the special exhibition taking place at the Pera Museum, which will last until April 1st of this year. This is a great way to spend half a day in Istanbul. The exhibition gives us an idea about Istanbul through the 19th and 20th centuries. Photos taken by the master of that time show the magnificent structures, the daily life and the intriguing personalities of an İstanbul of the slightly recent past.
A walk through this exhibition is a pleasant journey with nostalgic images of the city. Pera Museum is located in Beyoglu area, which is one of the liveliest hubs of the city, so after visiting the museum you can stroll along the narrow streets of this neighborhood where you can find your own picture of the 21st century cosmopolitan city of Istanbul. You can also have a coffee break in Pera Palace hotel which is located just across the museum. Take your time and indulge yourself while enjoying sunset over the Golden Horn. Pera Palace is one of the most prestigious hotel in Istanbul and once hosted the guests of the Orient Express in the past.
