Istanbul has a killer nightlife, with nightclubs lining the Bosphorus in summer along a strip known as the ‘Golden Mile’. There are tea gardens and coffee houses in Sultanahmet, groovy bars in Beyoglu, rooftop bars overlooking the Bosphorus, and cinemas along Istiklal Caddesi.

Live music is part of the evening’s entertainment at a mehane, or tavern, where locals come to share meze platters of seafood and drink aniseed-flavored raki. Strolling bands of musicians playing gypsy music strum from table to table, just as their musical forebears would have done centuries before.

If your visit to Istanbul doesn’t seem complete without an evening of Turkish feasting and belly dancing, make a date for a Turkish dinner and show. Along with the glittering sequins and chiffon scarves of the exotic floor show, the entertainment includes Anatolian folk dancers and musicians.
