Best Ways to Experience Mount Etna
By Viator, July 2015
For a start, you can check out the view of Mount Etna from nearby Taormina. The historic center of Taormina is on a hillside, and you can hike up a little higher on that hill to get a commanding view over the beach, the sea, and toward the famous volcano. If that tempts you to get closer, you have a few options.
You can stay at the lower elevations with a train trip around the base of Mount Etna on the Circumetnea Railway. This historic train winds through the foothills of the volcano, so you can see what Etna has done to the landscape. You can take side-trips into the beautiful Alcantara Gorges and other volcanic canyons in the area and hike at your own pace around the lower elevations of the mountain.
The more adventurous among you will no doubt enjoy an opportunity to hike up to the summit of Mount Etna to see the infamous crater. This is a particularly memorable way to see Mount Etna up close and personal, but it’s definitely something you want to do with a guide - temperature changes from the base to the summit of the mountain can be dramatic, and it’s also important to be with someone who knows what to do in case of volcanic activity.
Make your Mount Etna visit more romantic with a sunset summit. Take a tour of the volcano just before sunset, and then watch the sun go down from the summit of the mountain. It’s an unforgettable way to visit Mount Etna.
