Head west 179 miles (288 kilometers) and you’ll find one of India’s most sacred towns: Pushkar. According to Vedic texts, Brahma dropped a lotus flower while seeking a place to perform a sacred ritual and Pushkar is where it hit the ground. Among the city’s more than 500 temples is one of the few Brahma temples anywhere in the world. Trek via camel to the surrounding small villages and watch the evening prayer service along Varah Ghat.
Ramgarh, known for its massive artificial lake and Jamwa Mata temple, sits just 15 miles (25 kilometers) northeast of Jaipur. During the summer monsoon season, take to the lake by boat for bird watching or have a picnic lunch on the banks. The heritage Ramgarh Lodge, once the hunting palace of the Jaipur Maharaja, lets you extend a day trip in to a weekend getaway at the lake.
According to local legend, the Rajasthani village of Abhaneri, or City of Light, was named because the local goddess Harshat Mata is often depicted joyously spreading light and good feelings to her surroundings. The main reason to make the 59-mile (95-kilometer) trek to Abhaneri is for the Chand Baori stepwell, which is located within the Harshat Mata Temple. Dating back to the ninth century, the stepwell contains 3,500 steps that extend 100 feet (30 meters) deep, making it one of the oldest and largest stepwells in the country. Located along the road between Jaipur and Agra, Abhaneri is a good place to stop and stretch if you’re working your way to or from the Taj Mahal.
