Family Friendly Activities in Kolkata

The largest science museum in the subcontinent, Science City is easily the best place to spend a day with children. The museum’s collection of interactive exhibits includes a small aquarium, butterfly garden, 3D theater, a motion simulator and a hedge maze. Start your visit by riding the cable cars toward the back of the park so you can get an aerial view of the facilities first. Work your way through the outdoor exhibits in the morning before it gets too hot and then move inside where there is air conditioning.
Nicco Park is known around the state as the Disneyland of West Bengal. While that accolade is a bit of an overstatement, the small theme park’s several dozen attractions make it one of the best amusement parks in the city and a fun way to spend the day when you’re traveling with children. Besides the tamer rides like the carousel, bumper cars and train, the park offers a few more thrilling options for older kids and teenagers as well as a water park area complete with a wave pool for those hot afternoons.
Kolkata’s main water park, Aquatica, isn’t nearly as impressive as water parks you’d find in the US, but when it’s hot out and you have restless young children on your hands it can be a life saver. Adventure-seeking older children will appreciate the 65-foot (20-meter) high Niagara Falls water slide and the go-kart tracks located next to the water park. Expect a crowd on the weekends, especially when it’s hot outside.
Alipore Zoological Garden
After many decades of criticism for the cramped living conditions of the animals, the Alipore Zoological Garden has slowly started making positive changes, like a large Bengal tiger exhibit. Many of the enclosures are still severely lacking, but younger children will enjoy the large variety of animals on display.
