A renowned Buddhist temple, Sanjūsangen-dō Hall is home to 1,001 wooden statues of the 100-armed goddess of mercy, Kannon.

The boggling array of statues in the long, low wooden building are watched over by 18 guardian statues. The original building burned down in 1249, and was faithfully reproduced in 1266.

Archery contests have been held on the building's long veranda since the Edo period.

The tour was excellent and interesting. The morning and afternoon sections were led by different guides, who were very competent.

Practical Info

Sanjūsangen-dō Temple is a 25-minute stroll heading east from Kyoto Station, or a very short walk from Keihan Shichijo Station.
