Kyoto is rich with parks and landscaped gardens. Many gardens are temple gardens and reflect a Zen Buddhist philosophy and others feature an abundance of flowering cherry and plum trees, bamboo and Japanese maples.
Parks and gardens (as with temples) are best viewed early in the morning in order to soak up their unique atmosphere and aesthetic without the accompanying crowds. You will see the gardens at their best if you time your visit to coincide with cherry blossom season (spring) or fall.
